Ballarat Clayton’s CBCA Shortlist Evening
Wednesday 20 March, 6.00pm start, Barkly’s Restaurant, Main Road, Ballarat
For primary and secondary teachers, teacher librarians and interested school staff.
This popular evening provides a unique opportunity to learn about the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia) Awards’ entries before planning Book Week celebrations for students in your school. Our local experts will brief you on this year’s entries and discuss their favourite children’s books of 2019. Will our presenters’ choices match the judges’ choices? What are your selections for the 2019 CBCA Book of the Year Awards? Share your recommendations with fellow librarians and educators over dinner. Featured books will be available for purchase on the night.
Cost to be confirmed: $45 CBCA and SLAV members, $50 non-members (includes a two course meal and coffee).

Aura: Gold Changes Everything Special Viewing for Teachers
Tuesday 17 March, 7.30pm for drinks, 8.00pm talk, 8.30pm show (approx 90 minutes)
Teachers are invited to a special night to see Sovereign Hill’s night-time spectacular, Aura. Bring your teaching team for a team event. Explore space, delve into the Dreamtime, and relive Australia’s most important rebellion - all while travelling under the night sky. AURA combines 3D cinema, world-class projections and experiential storytelling to reveal how gold revolutionised Australia. A multi-sensory experience nightly.
$15.00 covers refreshments. (Normally $64.00 per person) For teachers only.

The Gnarrwirring Ngitj Lecture
Tuesday 26 May (National Sorry Day) 4-5.30pm, Victoria Theatre, Sovereign Hill
This fascinating annual lecture will focus on new research into Aboriginal history and culture. More details coming soon.

CBC Judges Talk - Curious Creatures- Wild Minds
A Saturday in June, 11.00am - 3.30pm at Sovereign Hill.
For library and teaching staff in public libraries, primary and secondary schools or those who work with books in publishing, book shops or museums. Our three Victorian Children’s Book Council of Australia judges will discuss the books short-listed for the prestigious Children’s Book of the Year Award, focusing on how you can use some of these titles for inspiration in your classroom, library or to share with an individual child, tween or young adult reader. This professional learning activity includes a book display by Ballarat Books. Lunch and light refreshments are included in ticket price.
Cost (TBC): $30, includes lunch and entry to Sovereign Hill. Registered participants may enter Sovereign Hill from 10.00am onwards.

VCE Geography Tourism Fieldwork Day at Sovereign Hill
Date to be confirmed, 10.30am to 2.00pm at Sovereign Hill
Sovereign Hill has been named Australia’s best tourist attraction on a number of occasions; there is no better place to undertake the fieldwork associated with the new Tourism unit in VCE Geography. Teachers will experience the education program exploring the interplay between socio-cultural, economic and environmental considerations affecting management strategies, and will be provided with practical examples of fieldwork undertaken by visiting school groups studying Unit 2: Tourism. You will have time to explore the site and to experience many of the attractions and presentations.
Cost: Free for teachers only. Lunch at participants’ own cost.

Weston Bate Memorial Lecture during History Week
During History Week in October, 5.30 to 8.00pm
For everyone interested in local history.
The Annual Professor Weston Bate Memorial Lecture takes place during History Week in the Victoria Theatre at Sovereign Hill. The lecture is in honour of the lasting contribution Professor Bate has made to the study of local history and its importance to Australia’s national story. Book early for this popular event.

Gnarrwirring Ngitj Corroborree

This award-winning community event featuring traditional and contemporary Wadawurrung dance and song is not to be missed! Before the sun sets and the full moon rises, enjoy a variety of hands-on educational activities suitable for all ages, and take this opportunity to explore Sovereign Hill’s new goldrush-themed adventure playground. Additionally, a delicious array of foods with a bush twist will be available, and the bar will be open for business. The feature performance - the Gnarrwirring Ngitj Corroboree - will begin as darkness descends. While there are seats available, attendees are advised to bring a picnic blanket.
